Tech Drops Final Home Game, To Baylor 15-8

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech dropped its final home game of the 2013 season in a 15-8 loss against Baylor on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The Red Raiders complete their regular season with a 25-28 overall record and 9-15 mark in Big 12 competition. Tech now shifts its focus to the Big 12 Championship, May 22-26, at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.

Baylor (27-25, 12-11 Big 12) avoided the series sweep while it too will advance to next week’s Big 12 Championship as either the fourth or fifth seed.

Tech used seven pitchers in the contest while the Bears had two big innings with five runs in the first and eight runs in the fifth, despite the Red Raiders out-hitting the Bears, 12-11. Tech and Baylor’s pitching staffs combined for 19 walks and seven hit-by-pitch.

Texas Tech starting pitcher Corey Taylor (2-5) took the loss allowing four runs on just two hits with four strikeouts and five walks in two innings of work.

Baylor reliever Crayton Bare (6-2) pitched four innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory while allowing four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Tech freshman Eric Gutierrez hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season –his third in as many games during the Baylor series – as he became the first Red Raider to homer in three consecutive games since 2007 (Kyle Martin).

Tech cut the Baylor lead to a pair of runs with a three-run second inning, sparked by a two-out, two-run single to center field by left fielder Brett Bell.

The Red Raiders then came within a run of tying the game on Bryant Burleson’s RBI bases-loaded walk, cutting Baylor’s lead to 5-4.

Baylor responded by sending 12 batters to the plate in the fifth during an eight-run inning. The Bears received six walks and two hit-by-pitch in the inning with two singles and a triple.

Freshman catcher Jarrard Poteete finished with three hits going 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI while Burleson extended his hit streak to 11 games going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and a double.

Nine Red Raiders finished with at least one base hit and Baylor also had seven players with a base hit while three Bears finished with a multi-hit game.

Texas Tech will open the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday, May 22 taking on regular season Big 12 champion Kansas State with a first-pitch time that is set to be announced on Sunday.

Red Raiders Claim Series Victory With 7-1 Win Over BU

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech clinched its first home Big 12 series of the season with a 7-1 victory in game two over Baylor on Friday evening in front of 2,817 fans at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The win also gave the Red Raiders their 1,500th all-time victory in program history.

Texas Tech (25-27, 9-14 Big 12) left-handed pitcher Jonny Drozd pitched six scoreless innings during his fourth win of the season while notching three strikeouts and allowing seven hits and one walk.

Junior reliever Dominic Moreno pitched the final three frames to earn his first career save allowing a run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk. He struck out the side in the ninth inning to end the game with a 1-2-3 inning.

Baylor starting pitcher Dillon Newman (3-3) took the loss allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Tech grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double from junior center fielder Devon Conley and a two-run homer over the left-field wall from freshman first baseman Eric Gutierrez. The home run was the second of the series for Gutierrez while giving him a team-leading five home runs on the season.

Drozd worked out of several jams throughout his 10th start of the season while Baylor left 14 runners on base.

Besides a perfect three-up, three-down top of the first inning, Drozd left Baylor base runners stranded in six consecutive innings (2nd-6th) while eight of the 12 left-on-base against Drozd were in scoring position.

Sophomore shortstop Tim Proudfoot led Tech at the plate going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. He drove in Tech’s fourth run of the game with an RBI single to left field in the fourth and he also drove in Tech’s fifth run in the seventh with an RBI triple to left-center field.

The Red Raiders added to their lead in the seventh on junior third baseman Jake Barrios’ two-run single through the right side. Barrios was one of seven Tech players with at least one base hit in the game.

Sophomore second baseman Bryant Burleson went 1-for-4 to extend his current hit streak to 10 games. It is his second double-figure hitting streak of the season while hitting in 11 straight games to start the season.

Texas Tech will look for its first Big 12 series sweep since 2011 with game three against Baylor set for Saturday at 12:06 p.m. In addition, the Red Raiders will honor three seniors before Saturday’s game holding Senior Day for infielder Scott LeJeune, outfielder Brennan Moore and right-handed pitcher Jerad McCrummen who will play in their final home game at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

Tech Falls to No. 13 ASU 8-5

TEMPE, Ariz. - Texas Tech dropped its final midweek game of the season in an 8-5 loss at No. 13 Arizona State on Wednesday evening in front of 1,821 fans at Packard Stadium.

The Red Raiders (23-27) surrendered eight unanswered runs after taking an early 5-0 lead while the Sun Devils (33-15-1) used five extra-base hits, including one home run, to snap a three-game losing streak against Texas Tech.

Tech reliever Matt Custred (1-2) took the loss allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and a season-high five strikeouts.

ASU reliever Adam McCreery (2-3) picked up the win pitching 3.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and issuing two walks. Sun Devils closer Ryan Burr notched his 11th save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts.

Red Raider left fielder Brett Bell went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI with his 10th multi-hit game of the season. Sophomore second baseman Bryant Burleson extended his hit streak to eight games going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior shortstop Jake Barrios went 1-for-4 with a team-leading three RBI.

Tech turned a double play in the first inning recording its 65th of the season - a total that leads the Big 12 and matches an all-time school record that was set two years ago in 2011.

Barrios and Burleson each tallied RBI in the first inning as Bell and center fielder Devon Conley singled and walked, respectively, to start the game as each came around to score giving Tech a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Bell drove in a run with an RBI single and Barrios followed with a two-run single to left field giving Tech a 5-0 advantage.

ASU followed with at least one run in four of the next five innings, starting with a solo home run in the second by designated hitter Nathaniel Causey.

The Sun Devils got within a run of the Red Raiders in the third with an RBI double and a pair of run-scoring singles.

Causey, who finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, struck again in the fifth inning with a two-run single which gave ASU a 6-5 lead.

Tech used three relief pitchers in the game while starting pitcher Matt Withrow took a no decision pitching three predetermined innings allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

ASU starter Eric Melbostad also didn't figure in the decision going just 1.2 innings allowing five runs on five hits and walking two batters.

Texas Tech will close its regular season hosting Baylor for a three-game series, May 16-18, at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. Games one and three of the series will have a national audience with FOX College Sports televising both Thursday (6:37 p.m.) and Saturday's (12:06 p.m.) contests. The middle game of the series on Friday will have a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
