A duct (duckt) is a large channel through which air passes in heating, cooling, or exhaust systems. There are two types of ducts: warm air-supply ducts and cold air return ducts. Many homes lose between ten and thirty percent of their heated and cooled air because of duct leaks. Duct leaks can also be a source of harmful dust, excess humidity, and toxins such as pesticides, combustion by-products, and radon (RAY-DON). If you are experiencing insufficient air flow, your ducts should be checked. Some leaks can be corrected with duct tape from your local hardware or home improvement store. In areas not easily accessible, you will need the assistance of a heating and air conditioning professional. An air duct cleaning helps purify the air and can save you money on utility bills by preventing air leakage. Heating and cooling equipment will also last longer and cost less to operate. A heating or cooling system must run longer and is less efficient when air ducts are dirty. For more information, contact your heating and air conditioning professional.
