Ceiling fans have been popular since the late 1800's; even today, they're valued as a great way to supplement your air conditioning system. With the cool breeze from a ceiling fan, you can keep your thermostat a couple of degrees higher and still be comfortable. In the winter, the direction can be reversed to push warm air towards the floor. You should have no problem finding a fan to blend in with your decor; they come in every variety, from space-age styles to antique replicas. Quality construction is another matter: shop carefully, and be prepared to invest a little more, for a quality fixture. You'll be glad you did. Cheaper ceiling fans tend to be plagued with problems like wobbling, humming, and a low-power motor that can't move much air. Look for a fan with at least a 20-year warranty. And choose a model that's easy to install. It should be able to hang at an angle while being wired. Ceiling fans require a special junction box approved for that purpose. The ceiling box will hold fans that weigh 35 pounds or less; anything heavier will need additional support.
